Building PHP 4.4.4, PEAR

When building (compiling) PHP4 (actually 4.4.4), you may run into a few caveats, like I did. I was able to overcome them, and hopefully these notes will help anyone else with the same problem, or perhaps myself, if I need to do this again in the future.
